Evoleum is the first brand of food supplements to use saffron.
Why has it chosen to reuse the world's most powerful and expensive pharmaceutical plant? In its search for a solution for women'séquilibre and well-being, evoleum turned to saffron: a miracle plant capable of easing menstrual pain, stimulating sexual pleasure and making women look younger past 60!
A spice that has crossed the ages
The evoleum team began by reading widely and discovered that the medicinal properties of saffron have been known since antiquity throughout the Mediterranean basin. A document dating from 1500 BC already mentions its virtues in the treatment of spasmodic pain and painful periods, and Homer praises its merits in the Iliad.
Known to cure certain gastrointestinal diseases, stimulate sexuality and treat depression, its uses still adorn frescoes in Crete and on the island of Santorini. But where do its exceptional properties come from?
A gifted spice
To confirm the broad spectrum of actions of the Crocus Sativus L. flower, our scientific team has studied a large bibliography. Here, we spare you the sum of the studies* but they proved that we were not in front of an old woman's remedy or a perlimpinpin powder. Indeed, the 3 red stigmas of the saffron pistil contain no less than 150 active principles.
The best-known are safranal, crocin, crocetin and picocrocin. Safranal gives saffron its aroma and smell, and acts onéquilibre emotional, memory and learning capacities. Crocin and crocetin are two carotenoid pigments responsible for saffron's orange color, with antidepressant and anti-inflammatory properties.
And finally the picocrocine brings its flavor and acts on the mood.
We had indeed found THE plant that would allow women to regain their superpowers! But why were we almost the only ones interested in this little natural miracle?
A rare and therefore very (very) expensive flower
The answer is simple, saffron is very expensive, which explains why it is rarely used today despite its incredible properties. The reasons for this high cost are threefold: the climatic conditions necessary to cultivate the crocus flower, its meticulous harvest and finally the preservation of its active ingredients.
To bloom, the flower of Crocus Sativus L. indeed needs a thermal shock. If it was certainly present from Egypt to Greece and even cultivated in France in the 19th century, 90% of the production is now located in the mountainous regions of the North of Iran where a soft season follows a dry and brutal cold, creating the necessary contrast to the blooming of saffron.
Concerning the harvest, it can only be done by hand. The pickers unhook the flowers one by one in order not to damage their pistil. 150 000 are necessary to obtain one kilo of saffron because only the red part of the pistils contains the active molecules (1gr of pistils = about 160 pistils).
Finally, it is necessary to separate the pistils from the flower with great delicacy and to preserve them according to the least invasive methods possible in order not to damage its properties. These 3 difficulties explain why its price can go up to 30.000€ per kilo. So why did evoleum not give up? We will soon reveal the secret of the creation of a revolutionary skin care range!
