Nutricosmetics is a new way of thinking about and consuming beauty. 

The premise? Beauty comes fromwithin. 

The idea? To absorb orally (and not topically) active ingredients aimed at improving the deep nutrition of the skin. To be consumed in the form of food supplements (powder, capsules, ampoules, etc.) with a strong taste, the products will act alone or as a complement to traditional cosmetic treatments, in order to potentiate their effects. 

Nutricosmetics is therefore at the meeting point of the health, beauty and nutrition industries.  

The principles of nutricosmetics

The main active ingredients used in nutricosmetics

The nutricosmetic cures can act on the skin at several levels depending on the active ingredients used in the formulas. 
With regard to the skinan action antioxidant is often sought. The aim is to prevent or at least slow down the oxidation phenomena responsible for the destruction of organic cells. These oxidation phenomena are usually caused by the attack of free radicals, favoured by UV rays, atmospheric pollution and other environmental factors.
The non-exhaustive list of the main nutrients used in the nutricosmetic formulations : 
- The vitaminsand in particular vitamin C, known for its properties antioxidants and its role in the production of collagen. It also helps to reduce free radicals.

- L'hyaluronic acidis naturally present in the body and is valued for its ability to retain water. This nutrient contributes to theelasticity and the firmness of the skin. 
- The ceramides are known to have a positive effect on theskin hydration. These are essential molecules in the constitution of the skin barrier. 
- The dermal proteinsIt is the most important component of the skin's cellular tissue, such as collagen. It nourishes the skin with amino acids and helps to maintain the skin's firmness and elasticity. Another example is keratin, which makes up 95% of the hair structure. It ensures the strength and elasticity of the hair, hence its presence in the composition of many hair care products. 
- The polyphenols are antioxidants well known, as well as anthocyanins, anthocyanidins, procyanidins, flavonoids, and ellagic and rosmarinic acids.
- Finally, it is worth mentioning the mineral salts as the zincwhich contribute to the repair process of cellular tissues. 
 

Nutricosmetics or cosmetofood?

The two terms are often used interchangeably, yet the approach is not the same. The cosmetofoodThe aim is to nourish the skin "from the inside" by favouring foods that are naturally rich in active ingredients. If the aim is the same as for nutricosmeticsThe two approaches are completely different, as they contribute to the beauty of the skin and the radiance of the complexion. 
Furthermore, the wide variability in the content of active ingredients from one variety of fruit and vegetable to another, and the potential presence of pesticide or insecticide residues, can completely negate the expected benefits. Conversely, products of the nutricosmetics are considered as food supplementsAs such, they must meet very strict consumer information and, above all, manufacturing quality requirements. 

 

The two approaches are different but work in synergy. The consumption of foods rich in active ingredients will potentiate the effects of nutricosmetics.
