Nutricosmetics is a new way of thinking about and consuming beauty.
The premise? Beauty comes fromwithin.
The idea? To absorb orally (and not topically) active ingredients aimed at improving the deep nutrition of the skin. To be consumed in the form of food supplements (powder, capsules, ampoules, etc.) with a strong taste, the products will act alone or as a complement to traditional cosmetic treatments, in order to potentiate their effects.
Nutricosmetics is therefore at the meeting point of the health, beauty and nutrition industries.
The principles of nutricosmetics
Scientific research has identified a number of nutrients which, when absorbed orally, have long-lasting effects on the skin's functions and structure. This is one of the major differences with traditional cosmetics, whose external application (on the skin) does not allow them to act beyond the superficial layers of the dermis, due to regulatory restrictions.
The idea is to think of traditional cosmetics and nutricosmetics as complementary products.
The main active ingredients used in nutricosmetics
Nutricosmetics cures can act on the skin on several levels, depending on the active ingredients used in the formulas.
As far as the skin is concerned, an antioxidant action is often sought. The aim is to prevent or at least slow down the oxidation phenomena responsible for the destruction of organic cells. These oxidation phenomena are usually caused by the attack of free radicals, favored by UV rays, atmospheric pollution and other environmental factors.
A non-exhaustive list of the main nutrients used in nutricosmetics formulations:
- Vitamins, particularly vitamin C, recognized for its antioxidant properties and its role in collagen production. It also helps reduce free radicals.
- Unsaturated fatty acids, such as Omega 3 and 6. They are known and appreciated for their beneficial action on the skin, slowing down the aging process.
-Hyaluronic acid, naturally present in the body, is valued for its ability to retain water. This nutrient contributes to skinelasticity and firmness.
- Ceramides are known for theirmoisturizing benefits. They are essential molecules in the skin's barrier structure.
- Dermal proteins, such as collagen, make up the bulk of the skin's cellular tissue. It nourishes the skin with amino acids and helps maintain its firmness and elasticity. We can also mention keratin, which makes up 95% of hair structure. It ensures hair's resistance and elasticity, which is why it is included in the composition of many hair care products.
- Polyphenols are well-known antioxidants, as are anthocyanins, anthocyanidins, procyanidins, flavonoids, and ellagic and rosmarinic acids.
- Last but not least, mineral salts such as zinc contribute to the repair of cellular tissue.
Nutricosmetics or cosmetofood?
The two terms are often used interchangeably, yet the approach is not the same. Cosmetofood is all about nourishing the skin "from within", with a focus on foods naturally rich in active ingredients. While the aim is the same as for nutricosmetic products, namely to contribute to the beauty of the skin and the radiance of the complexion, the two approaches are totally different.
What's more, the wide variation in active ingredient content from one variety of fruit and vegetable to another, and the potential presence of pesticide or insecticide residues, can completely nullify the expected benefits. On the other hand, nutricosmetic products are considered to be dietary supplements, and as such must meet stringent requirements in terms of consumer information and, above all, manufacturing quality.
The two approaches are different, but work in synergy. The consumption of foods rich in active ingredients potentiates the effects of nutricosmetic cures.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a molecule naturally present in our bodies. Particularly in the skin, which stores 50% of the human body's total hyaluronic acid, joints and eyes. It plays a key role in maintainingskin hydration and elasticity thanks to its unique ability to retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water. With age, natural hyaluronic acid production declines, leading to dryness, wrinkles and loss of cutaneous volume.
Collagen as an ally for more beautiful skin: effectiveness and innovation
Collagen, an essential protein in our bodies, plays a crucial role in skin structure. Present 80% as type I collagen and 15% as type III collagen, it is responsible for the skin's elasticity, firmness and density. However, with age, collagen production declines by 1% to 1.5% per year, leading to visible signs of cutaneous aging...
